The Big Facebook Product Announcement…Video for Instagram.
Yesterday, as previously rumoured, Facebook announced that Instagram has released an update enabling users to create 15 seconds of video. Of course, being Instagram, your videos can be filtered with a choice of 13 specifically designed filters. Exciting right? Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has promised that Instagram video incorporates, ‘everything we know and love about Instagram, but it moves.’
One of the big questions likely to be on everyone’s minds right now is ‘will it affect or wipe out Vine?’ Instagram’s 15 seconds certainly beats Vine’s 6 seconds, and Instagram has filters as well as offering video stabilising on iPhone devices. The biggest advantage likely to make Instagram dominate Vine is that Instagram already has successfully established communities. There are still things that both Vine and Instagram are missing, such as importing existing videos from your library, adding titles, changing lighting and other editing options.
You’ve probably started coming up with your first Instagram video idea already, which undoubtedly is what many brands will be doing. In the coming months, it will be interesting to see how brands take advantage of Instagram videos. If your brand already has an established community on Instagram, it would be a wasted opportunity not to take advantage of the video functionality. Another big question is how Facebook is going to make money from Instagram. There have been a number of rumours including providing a high end glossy magazine environment for advertising, but of course they don’t want to put off their massive number of app users.
You’ve got to keep the audience growing, because if Instagram goes out of fashion there would be nothing for advertisers. Vine is also expected to announce new features in the next few days…The battle is on!
