#OMG – Hashtags are coming to Facebook!

Having announced, just a little over a fortnight ago, that they would be launching “Verified Pages”, Facebook have taken another leaf out of Twitter’s book: the world’s biggest social network will soon be supporting hashtags too!

Like Twitter, hashtags for Facebook will also allow users to sift through topics of interest in a more organised way. “When you click on a hashtag in Facebook, you’ll see a feed of what other people and Pages are saying about that event or topic.”

For now, hashtags will only support basic functionality, such as allowing users to search for a specific hashtag and compose posts directly from a hashtag. However, Greg Lindley, Facebook’s product manager for hashtags, stated that the social network intends to develop on this with “trending hashtags and deeper insights, to help people discover more of the world’s conversations.”

Seeing hashtags in Facebook feeds is a pet-peeve for many, including myself. But I guess we can’t complain anymore as it will no longer be taboo!
