Published today, exactly one month to go before the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics, Tamar’s Sports Index Vol 4 looks at the popularity of Google searches for the currently selected Team GB athletes and throws up some interesting results.
The report looked at each Team GB athlete name by search volumes in the UK and ranked the athletes in order of ‘popularity’. Unsurprisingly globally recognised athletes like Andy Murray and David Beckham (not yet part of Team GB but heavily tipped to be selected) ranked at the top of the table. However, pentathlete Jess Ennis and diver Tom Daley ranked 3rd and 4th in the overall popularity table.
A look a ‘suggested searches’ for the popular athletes names gives a clue why – ‘Tom Daley bulge’ is the most popular suggested search with ‘Jess Ennis bum’ or ‘Jess Ennis hot’ a close second. It seems athletic prowess and sporting excellence isn’t the only thing tipping the popularity scales in these athletes favour.
We’ll be repeating the report after the Games to see how the athletes fared over time and how their popularity waxed and waned, in the meantime we’re wishing them all the Best of British luck next month.
Previous Sports Index reports have looked at a number of areas, including the start of the build-up to the Olympics themselves, as well as two football-focussed white papers covering both the World Cup in South Africa, and matters closer to home. Tamar have also released a number of infographics, including our current series with Team GB – which looks at the athletes themselves.Tweet
