What was interesting was the priority that was put on a number of topics that could have been covered. Bearing in mind that Y&Y is a consumer programme there was an interest in how sites achieved rankings and the market share of the Search Engines to help set the scene. But there was real interest in how people are adapting to using mobile search and how businesses are tying products into customers location as they are out shopping.
We then moved onto privacy and the trade off between searchers giving up personal information in return for greater relevancy in their searches. While most people are concerned on a small percentage are seriously concerned so some good news for the Search Engines there.
Finally we moved on to live data and real time search, again useful for consumers and an increasing part of the Search Engines armour for increasing relevancy.
All in all great to see Search being given attention in the wider world and the people at Radio 4 were incredibly helpful and organised.
My only regret was I used the term ‘vast majority’ something I abhor even more than repetitious use of ‘you know’ – I ended up sounding like a pompous MP.
