News has been leaked onto the internet that Microsoft has started work on their next operating system, predictably named Windows 8.

On the back of the hugely successful Window 7, it seems that Microsoft isn’t resting on their laurels.

Key features are:

  • Even faster startup, which is always nice.
  • Facial recognition technology.
  • Improved touch screen functionality
  • Improved support for the hibernate state.
  • ‘push-button reset’ which fully reinstall Windows without the need to reformat harddisk.  This means your settings, applications and files are not deleted.
  • And IE9 of course.

Target dates:

Beta version release date: mid 2011
Full release: mid 2012

According to the leaked source, there will also be a Windows App store, which can be seen as a belated attempt to break up iTunes apps monopoly.
