Google & Bing sign up Twitter

Twitter to appear in Google and Bing Search Results

First Bing and then Google announced that they had signed up to include Twitter updates in their search results. As Marissa Meyer commented ‘We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months.’

So nothing live as yet but expect these to play a major part in more timley searches soon.

This probably presents some interesting opportunities for us in Search and for you as someone looking to gain traffic via this Google/Twitter alliance. But a lot may depend on the actual placement of the Twitter updates and how many Tweets they choose to show per query. And how will they decide which Tweets to show?

I think we can assume these are not going to have an impact on the Sponsored listings so my guess would be a set of 3 Tweets similar to the current  News results that typically show between the 3rd and 4th natural listings.  See mock up below.

As to how they choose them maybe they will rely on trending topics or perhaps using their latest Trust Rank identify reliable sources (BBC etc) and use their Twitter feeds.

Anyway, all very interesting and entirely predictable but I am just a tad disappointed that Google hasn’t, so far, decided to give real time search a bit more of a go itself.
