The Race to 1 Billion – Facebook UK hits 20m

20090622153614_facebookvstwitter8About a month ago, TechCrunch leaked some internal Twitter papers and the expose revealed Biz Stone and co.’s dreamworld projection of 1 billion tweeters by 2013.

Love the ‘blue sky’ thinking, Biz!

But, I think the 1 billion by 2013 dream is more realistic for Mark Z. and the Facebook crew.

They’re already a quarter of the way there! To date, Facebook has 250,000,000 active users, which is about 14% of the world’s internet surfing population (1.5 billion).

Of FB’s 250,000,000 active users, only 40% are from the 2 major English speaking markets.

The number of UK users just passed the 20 million mark and in the US, around 80 million have jumped on to the Facebook wagon.

Further engaging the world is clearly on Facebook’s mind as there are currently more than 50 translations available on the site, with more than 40 in development.

Right now, the fastest growing demographic on Facebook are people aged 35 and older.

The growth of my own Facebook ‘recently added friends’ list clearly demonstrates this statistic – almost all are uncles and aunties aged 50+!.

But, as Facebook penetrates the emerging markets, will the average ‘joiner’ age drop?

In the US, Facebook was ‘hip with the kids’ before everyone else.

It will be interesting to see if it’s the same elsewhere.
