So is it latte or espresso?

For those who havent seen the news Google has launched their next generation of search. And all hell is going to break loose. At least, thats what some would have you believe.

Well no, it’s actually a change to the infrastructure and to quote Sitaram Iyer and Matt Cutts of Google  ‘it’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions’.

Here is what it looks like -amazing!

Spot 5 changes and win a quid.

Spot 5 changes and win a quid.

What they are looking for is feedback at a top level, just run your normal search here and if you see any major differences click on the ‘Dissatisfied? Help us improve’ link at the bottom of the results.  I dont think the usual rounds of ‘I used to rank at #6 and now I am #8 Google is broken so please help me’ is going to, ahem, cutt it.

But do have a play, maybe you can see something you wouldn’t expect to and you can help the engineers out. They won’t be able to thank you personally but I am sure the good vibes will hit you with improved rankings later.

Should you do anything now? No, nothing changed yet and even if it does deal with it using facts not guesswork, unless you are drinking the Felix Felicis potion. In which case go for it and let me know how you get on.

Something I did find intersting was point two in the official blog post which said

To build a great web search engine, you need to:

1. Crawl a large chunk of the web.

2. Index the resulting pages and compute how reputable those pages are.

3. Rank and return the most relevant pages for users’ queries as quickly as possible.

For me the really key thing was ‘compute how reputable those pages are‘. Now that is where the  juice is, qualifying a pages reputation is key and that is what you need to be focussed on, that and all the other stuff you know you need to do.

So to answer my question is it latte or espresso? For me so far this is Horlicks, light and frothy and will put you to sleep. Good night.
