Social media crimes…

We are quite fond of social networks here at Tamar as you might have gathered. However, there is a (as with most things in life) a darker more sinister side to these sites we visit so religiously. There have been countless crimes committed on (or because of) these social networking sites. Let's have a look at some of the biggest ones shall we?

Blackmail…

In 2007 Miss New Jersey's, Amy Polumbo, reputation was tarnished a little when some rather raunchy pictures of her were taken from her Facebook page and emailed to the pageant board by a group calling itself "The Committee to Save Miss America." The pictures weren't as explicit as the furore about them would lead one to believe. She was fully clothed in all of them, but as Miss New Jersey she needs to uphold her pristine reputation and luckily for her the pageant board decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and allowed her to keep her crown although she has contemplated changing her name because of the incident!

Suicide…

Megan Meier made a friend named "Josh Evans" (later discovered that he doesn't actually exist and the profile was created by a group of neighbourhood friends that included one of Megan's former friends) on social networking site, MySpace, and after sending each other messages for 6 weeks or so, "Josh" sent a final message to Megan in which he told her that he didn't want to be her friend anymore, because he'd heard that she was mean to her friends. The next day Megan Meier was found in her room where she had hanged herself.

Attempted murder…

Cyber bullying is alive and well and one of the best and most well known incidents was in 2008 when Andrea Haskins (15) threatened and eventually shot Amanda Knoble (17) in the leg after the two girsl had an argument on social network, MySpace.

These are but a few stories involving crime and social networks, for a longer list visit the Master In Criminal Justice website.
