Google makes Gmail available offline

Alex Christie

12 February 2009

Google has enabled offline access for Gmail, only available to users in the USA and United Kingdom. The users will be allowed to access their Gmail account when they aren’t connected to the internet.

Gmail will load into the web browser enabling users to read, archive or write messages, composed messages will remain in the users outbox until the next time the user connects to the internet. Google even provides an online video demoing how the offline Gmail access works.

This is a major step for Google as it levels the playing field in Cloud computing against competitors such as Microsoft and Yahoo’s Zimbra.
