Adopt-a-blog #20 – How to get things done

Alex Christie

16 February 2009

So I adopted a blog called Lifehacker.com, which advertises itself as the website for 'tips and downloads for getting things done'.  We all know that the most finite resource in everyone's life today is time; I was interested to see what gems of wisdom this website would offer.  Having now invested some of my very precious time in reviewing the website, I have come to the following conclusions…..

The layout of the homepage is absolutely dreadful!  Mainly because it is so cluttered that you don't know where to focus.  Even basics such as copy not aligned correctly so that it clashes with other text and headers

The overall style of the website reminds me more of a really bad accountancy software package than an exciting IT website.  The dull grey background is, well, dull grey.  It's enough to drain the life out of even the most interesting of topics – not that there were any there that jumped out at me!

Finally, it does not do exactly what it says on the tin.  It's pretty difficult to find any articles on the site which actually tell me how to 'get things done'.  I was instructed on subjects covering such diverse trivia as magnetic sticky tape, which house-plants create the most oxygen and even how to conjure up a Valentines evening on the cheap – this is a million miles away from my idea of 'getting things done'!  Suffice to say that this website is very high up on my list of items for Room 101.
