Google launched its new service, Friend Connect, a new service that is designed to let webmasters add “social networking” features to their site. It allows features such as chat, games, ratings to be added to your site by simply copying and pasting a few lines of code into your site.
The service is much like Facebook’s Friend Connect service whereby, if setup correctly, will report any activity on a Friend Connect powered site straight back to your Facebook profile although Google will offer a broader range of access points including Google ID, Yahoo! and AOL.
CEO of digital marketing agency Sharpe Partners, Kathy Sharpe, said in an interview that
"It's completely on brand for Facebook because that's what they're known for, social networking , Google's known for algorithms and search."
She also thinks that the next big area of growth will be mobile where you'll be able to use a kind of universal ID for access to different sites designed for mobile. It will be interesting to see who dominates the ‘Friend Connect’ arena first. What are your thoughts?Tweet
