Microsoft’s new search strategy

12 November 2008 | Posted by Bernard Van der westhuizen | Business Analyst | Search

In a move that can be likened to Barack Obama asking George W Bush for political guidance, Microsoft
has turned to one its former foes, Sun Micro
Systems
for marketing advice.

The exact details of the arrangement is to be
published soon but early indications are that Sun will promote a Microsoft
toolbar which has built in Microsoft Live Search
queries and other search features. Microsoft concedes that they need to make
their search engine more attractive to prospective advertisers and this move
will hopefully be the start of that.

It has to however be noted that Sun has
struck similar deals with rivals Google
and Yahoo! before.
Since Microsoft’s bid for Yahoo failed earlier
this year, they vowed to dedicate more resources in getting a bigger share of
the search pie.
