Putting the “social” into the “media”

Just some random news: I was wandering around the Cape Town V&A Waterfront last night with some friends and we had to wait to cross the swing bridge to the Clock Tower. The swing bridge was open so that a 301-foot (92 m) yacht could sail out into the ocean. Intrigued, we watched this luxury yacht, complete with two helicopters, a powerboat of about 40 feet (12 m)) and a sailboat of about 40 feet (12 m) on the many upper decks. Wondering who this “ship” belonged to, I took note of the name: Tatoosh.

Turns out Tatoosh belongs to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen who purchased this super-yacht in 2001 for a reported US$100 million. And apparently Tatoosh is one of his smaller yachts. So that’s what he does with his millions of dollars. With Microsoft possibly facing a bit of a rocky future financially, maybe he got out at the right time (ie: long ago!) ?
