How The Times deals with heavy traffic

As you would expect The Times is experiencing a lot of traffic to their website as we all try and keep up to date with the interesting times we live in.

So it was useful to see how they dealt with the traffic to their site when it all became a bit too much for their servers this morning. To be fair their site only defaulted for a few minutes but it was to a new URL and showed the following page and information:


There were a bunch of links going to news stories and even a videocast from Sky on the breaking news.

I thought this was a really good way to deal with a  really busy period and to understand why their site would be busy and to serve content based on that requirement rather than a generic holding page.

Food for thought anyway.
