Olympic Search Volumes

With the start of the greatest sporting event on earth just round the corner, I thought it would be interesting to see which athletes are brining in the highest search volumes.   Using Google’s new Insight tool can we also take a look at some regional variations and see if there are any outsiders for a medal.

Unsurprisingly Mo Farah is the track athlete that has generated the most interest online with more searches than even Paula Radcliffe! However due to the dominance of the African nations in the longer distance events the majority of the searches have been based around the UK and US.

As for the term ‘Olympics’ the majority of the searches have been coming from unexpectedly New Zealand – perhaps they are banking on a bumper medal haul this year!  Australia and Canada occupy the 2nd and 3rd spots with the Brits trailing in 6th place.  With the opening ceremony due to take place this afternoon it’s bound to be a great spectacle!
