Guinness present record to FireFox3

Alex Christie

3 July 2008

Yes I know, it’s another FireFox related post, but this time I am going to gloat about the fact that I was right when I predicted that FireFox 3 was going to be big.

Guinness, the de facto registrar of exceptional achievements, has credited Mozilla for officially holding the record for most downloads within a 24 hour time period. Yes that’s correct. FireFox now holds the record for exactly 8,002,530 downloads within a 24 hour period.

Besides the fact that this is a great achievement for Mozilla, who oversees FireFox development, it’s also a great achievement for open source development. It means that people all over the world are starting to accept open source with greater enthusiasm and that could mean big changes for the future.

FireFox is no where close to the kind of market share that IE enjoys, but given time, I am sure it’s going to prove its weight and out class the norms we have become accustomed to.
