Google Earth

Alex Christie

5 June 2008

I’ve always been a massive fan of Google Earth. My son and I used it to look at where I would be staying when I went out to visit Tamar’s Cape Town office, back in February.

It really does make the world a smaller place!
So I was fascinated when I heard that the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has launched a geospatial simulator within Google earth, which focuses on people displaced in places such as Chad and Iraq.

The layer not only shows UN Projects but videos, text and photos of what day to day living is like for refugees across the world.
Some believe that the safety of the refugees is compromised by drawing attention to their plight, but this can be no more so than what is already portrayed on television.
I believe that it is a great use of modern media, for such a great cause.
