Ask.com makes major acquisitions

Alex Christie

16 May 2008

Recently Ask.com has been buying up well known internet reference websites such as Dictionary.com and also Theraurus.com and Reference.com which falls part of their acquisition of Lexico Publishing Group.

According to Jim Safka, CEO of Ask.com, over 30% of their user’s search requests are requesting reference material. I see the acquisitions as an excellent move as Ask.com are not abandoning there core multipurpose search engine, but rather accommodating a large chunk of their users by better delivering reference material.

Due to a deal IAC (who owns Ask.com) negotiated with Google last year, the reference websites will be entitled to a larger commission from Google Ads that are displayed on their websites.
