Britons spend £1 Billion a month online

Britons spend more online than anybody else in Europe. According to latest statistics from Mintel Retail Research internet sales in the UK have gone up to £12.8 billion in 2007 – that’s more than 1 billion pounds a month. Germans have spent £10.3 billion, France £5.5b, Italy £870 million and Spain £790 million. Britain has also the highest rate of growth in online shopping: a 75% increase in revenue between 2005 and 2007.

Tesco comes out top as the largest food retailer in Europe, at more than twice the size of its nearest rival Ooshop.com. run by French retailer Carrefour. The largest online retailer is the Otto Group, followed by Arcandor and Amazon.
A further increase in online sales of 199% is also predicted for Britain by 2012.

To put that into perspective, the 220+ million online users in China spent approx £1 billion in the whole of 2007. So the UK is going great guns.
