Google updating on the hour, every hour?

Ten o’clock shuffle becomes an hourly shuffle

A post I did last week on the regular changes in the Google rankings at 10 am UK time each morning is already looking outdated. We are now seeing about three to four ‘shuffles’ each day, sometimes more.

Typically these will be a few early in the morning and then an update in the early evening.

Today for example we have seen changes to a set of search results three times at 8am, 9am and 10am.

8am 9am 10am 11am
A A A A
B B B B
C C C C
D D F F
E F G G
F G D D
G H H H
H E I I
I I J J
J J F F

The results were then the same at 11am as they were at 10am. What happened to site ‘E’ at 10am? Well, this site has indented results for two pages and as such is now ranked at #11 and #12. This drop usually occurs when Google clusters two results from one site. When they are split up again the higher rankings will return.

What is interesting is that on all three results the datacenter used was the same one: http://209.85.135.104 So no fluctuation due to different datacenters being used then.

So is the shape of things to come? One thing I have been thinking about, and I am making some assumptions here, is that as Google is calculating rankings on an ongoing basis wouldn’t we expect more flucuation in the results? As in hourly or by the minute? Or is it  problematical for Google to publish in this way?

Or, perhaps Google is holding back the changes they are creating as users expect to see more solidity in the rankings?

And is signing into your Google account and saving your searches likley to be something we need to do more of as the rankings change more and more?

We will see what happens this evening as well as in the next few days. Of course, this could be Google trialing something or, as previously discussed, just them messing with our heads!

OK, update time. Change again at 2pm!

8am 9am 10am 11am 2pm
A A A A A
B B B B B
C C C C C
D D F F E
E F G G F
F G D D G
G H H H D
H E I I H
I I J J I
J J F F J

The indented result has split and site ‘E’ is back ranking at #4. So a lot of shuffling within the top ten results. Site ‘F’ back at #11. Thoughts anyone? Thats the fourth set of results so far today!
