China Mobile Search

Alex Christie

1 February 2008

Without any official announcement, Chinese mobile users will be able to search Google when they log onto CMNET- the Chinese mobile portal. The search is mainly for pictures, ring tones and other multimedia formats.  It was a year ago that Google announced its agreement with CMNET and that has helped provide better search services for Chinese mobile phone users.

The potential market of mobile search in China is immense and could become even bigger than internet search. Here is a graph that illustrates the huge gap between mobile and internet search users in China.

We can see that users of Chinese mobile are almost three times that of internet users and it has been reported that it will escalate even more in the next couple of years.

There is great potential for mobile search in the future as handsets become more powerful, and mobile browsers behave more like their desktop counterparts.
