US under threat as #1 for internet usage
Last week, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) issued its 21st Statistical Survey Report on the Internet Development in China (so far in Chinese only, unfortunately). They reported that mainland China had 210 million internet users at the end of 2007, making China the second highest Internet user population in the world (after the United States).
This increase in use is only expected to accelerate as it catches on in rural China, where internet usage had previously been held back by relatively lower incomes and standards of infrastructure. In 2007 rural internet usage had grown over 120% from the previous year.
At the time of the release of the report, the U.S. exceeded China by only 5 million users. Seeing as China gained nearly 50 million new internet users between July and December last year, and that it is already more than halfway through January now…perhaps China has already become the worlds biggest internet user?Tweet
