Keyword density…a brief guide

How much is too much?

As the copywriter here at Tamar I thought to myself, “why not write about, well, how I write?” There are many different aspects to writing copy for websites and optimising them, I will try and relay to you my understanding and habits when writing.

Firstly make sure that the articles or pieces you are writing for the website are in fact relevant to that site. It might seem blatantly obvious, but so is stopping at a red traffic light and if you have ever driven in London, you’d know that there are many surprises at intersections! However when you are creating copy for a particular topic, make sure to include relevant keywords that are in the tags and descriptions as well.

So as vital as keywords are, so too is keyword density.  Keyword density refers to how many of your keywords are displayed on a single page or section thereof.  There are a couple of ways to add keywords, mainly the wrong way and the right way.

The wrong way would be to simply add in as many as possible making it completely unreadable to users, but resulting in an inappropriate use of keywords.  Keywords are simply dumped into the text without regards; however, the correct way to do this is to ensure its readability and practicality towards potential customers and search engines, so it’s finding a balance.

So in future, don’t simply cram all the keywords you can into the copy, take a step back and remember who you are writing for, users, human potential clients and customers, make sure that your copy reads easily and pleasantly.  This way you will turn browsers into customers in no time.
