Facebook Loses Half a Million US Members In Week

For the past couple of weeks – since Facebook’s new Social Ads system has been rolled out – I’ve been keeping a close eye on the number of Facebook users in their Top 10 countries. I was alarmed to notice that the number of US users has actually dropped by almost 500,000 in a week. However, every other country in the top 10 is seeing their user base increase.

Here’s a look at a few of those numbers for you:

US users on Nov 21st – 22,264,820
US users on Nov 28th – 21,782,240
= a loss of 482,580 / -2%

UK users on Nov 21st – 7,237,320
UK users on Nov 28th – 7,547,460
= a gain of 310,140 / +4%

Canadian users on Nov 21st – 7,866,160
Canadian users on Nov 28th – 7,880,280
= a small gain of 14,120 / +4%

French users on Nov 21st – 802,360
French users on Nov 28th – 898,300
= a gain of 95,940 / +12%

The only conclusion I can draw from this is that whilst Social Ads don’t seem to be putting users off (they have been rolled out in several areas), the new Beacon ad system is (this has only been launched in the US) is. I have to say I’m surprised in the actual number of people that have decided it’s one step too far for them, although only time will tell how long these people stay away for. Either way, half a million users is surely a number that Facebook can’t ignore.
