Wikipedia beginning to appear in new areas of the SERPs

We have noticed in the last few days that Wikipedia listings are beginning to appear in SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) in areas that they have not been seen in before.

Primarily this is the area of finance encompassing loans, insurance, mortgages, credit cards and so on.

Only the user searching wil be able to tell you if this makes the results more relevant but my guess would be probably not. And particularly for niche searches as well where it is likely the user will already know what ‘product’ they are looking for and be looking to take an action, something they cannot do on Wikipedia.

This does remind me of the situation we had about three years ago where Amazon links populated and dominated many search terms due to the strength of their site. But their relevancy was low.

I think Wikipedia is a really useful resource but to me it would make more sense to have their pages in the ‘Related Searches’  rather than in among the organic SERPs.
